Coffee Grinding — Why It Matters and How to Get It Right
Why Grind Size Matters
If you change one thing about your coffee routine this year, make it the grind.
It is a small adjustment, but it can make a noticeable difference in how your coffee tastes.
Freshly Ground Beats Pre-Ground
As soon as coffee is ground, it begins losing aroma and flavor to the air. Those wonderful smells escaping from the bag are part of what you want to preserve for your cup.
Whole beans hold on to those qualities longer. Grinding immediately before brewing is one of the simplest and most effective upgrades you can make at home.
That said, freshly ground coffee is not a requirement for enjoying a good cup. The best option is the one that works for your equipment, schedule, and morning routine.
Match the Grind to Your Brewer
Every brewing method works best within a general range of grind sizes. Here is a simple place to start:
French press: coarse. Look for large, chunky grounds. Grinding too finely can leave more sediment in the cup and make the coffee taste harsh.
Drip coffee maker: medium. This is the dependable middle ground for most automatic machines.
Pour-over: medium-fine. A slightly finer grind can help create an even extraction and a clean, flavorful cup.
Espresso: fine. Espresso requires finely ground coffee to create the resistance needed as the machine pushes water through the coffee under pressure.
These are starting points, not rigid rules. Your brewer, filter, coffee, water, and personal taste can all affect the ideal setting.
If It Tastes Off, Adjust the Grind
The grind controls how easily water extracts flavor from the coffee. If your cup does not taste right, a small adjustment may be all it needs.
Bitter, dry, or harsh? The coffee may be over-extracted. Try grinding a little coarser.
Sour, thin, or weak? The coffee may be under-extracted. Try grinding a little finer.
Change only one step at a time, then brew again. Small adjustments can produce a surprisingly large difference.
Choose What Fits Your Kitchen
I offer whole-bean coffee for anyone who prefers to grind immediately before brewing. I also offer several common grind options so you can order coffee prepared for the brewer you already use.
There is no wrong setup. A grinder can give you more control, but convenience matters too. The goal is not to build the perfect coffee station. It is to make a cup you genuinely enjoy.
If you are unsure which grind to choose, tell me how you brew your coffee and I will point you in the right direction.
